Nursing Skills: Nurses require a great deal of patience, as well as the ability to provide comfort and caring to their patients. Nurses carry a lot of responsibility and they must be able to carry this lightly on their shoulders. Nursing jobs also require the ability to follow orders precisely and to be able to provide precise instruction to others. In addition, nursing professionals must have the judgment to determine when additional assistance is needed.

Nursing School Courses: Nursing school courses include basic instruction in anatomy, biology, chemistry, microbiology, nutrition, and psychology. In addition, nursing schools include considerable supervised clinical experience. Most clinical nursing experience is typically provided in hospitals, in departments such as maternity, pediatrics, psychiatry, and surgery. Some nursing schools now offer clinical experience in nursing homes, public health departments, home health agencies, and ambulatory clinics.

Nursing Employment: About 60% of nursing jobs are in hospitals, the remainder being in clinics, home healthcare agencies, nursing homes, schools, temporary help agencies, and government agencies. Job prospects in licensed practical nursing, registered nursing, and more advanced nursing fields such as nurse practitioner, clinical nursing specialist, nursing anesthisist, and certified nursing-midwife are expected to grow faster than the average occupation through 2010.

Note that some of the more advanced nursing jobs are only available to those who have obtained a higher level of nursing training such as a BS in nursing or an MS in nursing. Many new nursing jobs will result as thousands of nurses leave the profession, and demand continues to rise. Nursing school graduates will be well positioned to find jobs and advance their careers.

Nursing Work: There are many types of nursing roles, including, hospital nursing, office nursing, home health nursing, public health nursing, industrial nursing, head nursing, nursing supervisors, and nursing home nursing. In addition, these are numerous more advanced nursing roles, such as nurse practitioner, clinical nursing specialist, nursing anesthisist, and certified nursing-midwife.

The number of nursing jobs that demand higher levels of nursing school education will continue to rise. The National League of Nursing reports that the amount of information needed in basic nursing jobs in increasing rapidly and therefore driving demand for more education. Overall, job opportunities for nursing professionals are expected to be excellent, as there is expected to be a shortage of 400,000 nurses by 2010.
